Design of a model in which known variables, known as "explanatory" variables, are used to determine unknown variables, known as "variables to be explained".
These mathematical models are used to anticipate events or situations, such as predicting the onset of a disease based on a group of warning signs. Modelling is often based on artificial intelligence.
