Team presentation

The team "Cellular Physiology of Cortical Microcircuits" aims to study synapses between different types of neurons, leading to specific circuits of the cerebral cortex.

The 4 main objectives of the "Cellular Physiology of Cortical Microcircuits" team are:

  • Identification of layer- and neuron-specific forms of plasticity, their molecular mechanisms and functional roles
  • Understanding the functional role of an unknown subtype of inhibitory interneuron during sensory processing
  • The search for cellular and molecular determinants of dendritic inhibitory synapses
  • To identify the physiological role of extracellular perineonal nets (PNNs) and the synaptic mechanism by which they limit cortical plasticity.

Neurons involved in cognitive flexibility communicate at a distance
To adapt to the small and large events that give the world its ever-changing character, we use an essential ability: cognitive flexibility. It enables us to improvise in the event of disruptions on our morning commute, to cope with the unexpected ...

Inhibitory autapses: essential structures to synchronize a prominent type of cortical neuron with cognitive-relevant network activity
A study conducted by Alberto BACCI’s (CNRS) team at the Institut du Cerveau - ICM showed that a specific type of inhibitory neuron of the cerebral cortex makes a large number of synapses with themselves (autapses). Autaptic self-inhibition is much ...

Unraveling brain plasticity dynamics
Brain plasticity is the dynamic process happening in our brain as we learn through experience, and it varies greatly with age. What are the mechanism behind this? A study conducted by Alberto Bacci’s team at the Institut du Cerveau - ICM discovered ...
