Functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi) is an innovative modality technology that offers the ability to monitor brain mesoscale hemodynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution across a field of view encompassing both cortical and subcortical structures. First demonstrated in vivo in 2011 in rats, it has gained popularity over the past decade and is now emerging as a fully-fledged recording modality in behavioral neuroscience, present in more than 10 species. Despite this success, many labs integrating fUSi to their repertoire still develop their own tools and data sharing is hindered by the lack of open formats and consensus statements on experimental design, preprocessing and analysis.
This workshop aims to bridge this gap by giving a theoretical and practical training on functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi) from recognized leaders in the field. It is primarily intended to PhD students and postdocs aiming to use fUSi in their experiment, but we also welcome untrained scientists eager to discover its principle and applications. No prerequisite is necessary. Through six interactive modules, we will cover the theoretical bases of ultrafast imaging (Module #1), training on surgical design and fUS preparation (Module #2), practical implementation of fUSi experiments in different contexts and species (Module #3), how to preprocess and analyze fUS data, using open-source tools developed by the community (Module #4). We will finally cover the specific developments of fUSi in clinical settings (Module #5) and ultrasound-based molecular imaging and manipulation tools that offer promising avenues for neuroscience (Module #6)
After this 2-day workshop, attendants will be able to understand the physical principles underlying ultrafast ultrasound imaging, be autonomous in designing and conducting their own experiments to answer neuroscience questions, be aware of the state-of-the-art open-sources resources to analyze and share fUSi data, and proficient in using them. Hands-on training will be provided in the next editions of the workshop. This strategy aligns with the global Paris Brain Institute strategy to democratize the use of innovative technologies and to empower open science and collaborative projects. Career roundtables, consensus statements and brainstorming sessions will be an integrative part of this event, as well as a social event on December 8 to foster and strengthen the community.

Student Support and Registration Waivers
To promote diversity and equal access to science, we support applications from under-represented countries and minorities in science, as well as from PhD students from underfunded labs. A total number of 10 stipends, including registration waiver and accommodation in Paris, will be granted to selected applicants based on the relevance of their abstract and a motivational statement.
To apply, please send in a single pdf file to workshop-ultrasound@icm-institute.org before Oct 31, 2026
- a CV
- your abstract (max 250 words)
- a motivational statement explaining how fUSi will be integrated in your research and how impactful this workshop will be on your research (max 250 words)
- a brief description of ongoing and envisioned collaborations
Registration deadline
