"The role of inhibitory neuron-generated synchrony in cognition and emotion"

Vikaas SOHAL
Vikaas SOHAL

I will discuss two projects related to the role of synchrony in brain function. First, I will discuss the role of gamma-frequency synchronization between prefrontal parvalbumin interneurons in cognitive flexibility, including relevance to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. I will draw on Ca2+ imaging studies of population activity in prefrontal cortex to understand how this synchrony may contribute to information processing. I will also describe how gamma-synchrony may promote plasticity in long-range inhibitory projections when mice learn new rules. Second, I will discuss beta-frequency synchronization between somatostatin interneurons in the amygdala and hippocampus as a cross-species biomarker of emotional state.
