Speaker : Vikaas SOHAL, UCSF WEILL INSTITUTE FOR NEUROSCIENCES
"The role of inhibitory neuron-generated synchrony in cognition and emotion"

I will discuss two projects related to the role of synchronyin brain function. First, I will discuss the role of gamma-frequency synchronization between prefrontal parvalbumininterneurons in cognitive flexibility, including relevance tocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. I will draw on Ca2+imaging studies of population activity in prefrontal cortex tounderstand how this synchrony may contribute toinformation processing. I will also describe how gamma-synchrony may promote plasticity in long-range inhibitoryprojections when mice learn new rules. Second, I willdiscuss beta-frequency synchronization betweensomatostatin interneurons in the amygdala andhippocampus as a cross-species biomarker of emotionalstate.
