A physiological process that causes a modification of the cell's functions and an irreversible cessation of its divisions.
It is now well established that the accumulation of senescent cells in the body contributes to age-related diseases, but its role in the initiation of these diseases and all the underlying mechanisms involved are not yet fully understood.
Tissue accumulation of "senescent" cells was also observed. These are cells that are unable to divide, have lost their function, but can induce inflammation and the production of oxidized residues that are toxic to the body.
