The International Brain Bee competition took place from July 4 to 9, in a remote format. In collaboration with the International Brain Bee Committee, the Institut du Cerveau participated in the organisation of this competition, the award ceremony for which took place on 9 July during the international neuroscience congress FENS Forum 2022, held this year in Paris.
The International Brain Bee Competition
Founded by Dr. Norbert Myslinski at the University of Maryland in 1998, the International Brain Bee now has more than 50 participating countries. The goal of this initiative is to encourage adolescents to learn more about neuroscience and pursue careers in research to advance the discovery of treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. The competition also brings together the winners from the participating countries each year, with a high-level competition and a programme of cultural and intellectual exchanges.
The Brain Institute, organizer of the 2022 edition
This year, the Brain Institute, through its Open Brain School training organisation, helped to organise this competition, which took place online, around high-level scientific tests, with the support of the Institute’s researchers. It brought together candidates from 31 countries, including Alexandre Ravel, the winner of the France Brain Bee 2022 competition, the French edition of the competition, which took place last March.
This event also provides an opportunity for these young neuroscience enthusiasts to discuss their respective careers and attend presentations by international experts. The animation program developed for this week of competition was rich with lectures on various subjects: the relations between neuroscience and music (Joseph LeDoux, PhD, New York University, US), the neural networks involved in social interactions in primates (Julia Sliwa, PhD, Institut du Cerveau/CNRS), and the role of Pitié-Salpêtrière in the history of neuroscience (Bernard Zalc, MD PhD, Sorbonne University).
International recognition
The International Brain Bee is a non-profit educational organization formed through partnerships with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), the Dana Foundation, the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), the Neuroscience Society (SfN) and the American Psychological Association (APA).
As a program to support and recognize young people with a passion for neuroscience on all continents, the award ceremony for the 2022 competition took place on July 9 during the opening of FENS Forum 2022, one of the largest neuroscience conferences in the world.
The Brain Institute would like to congratulate all the candidates for this year's 2022 edition, and in particular the winners. Below is the final ranking and video of the ceremony:
- IBB 2022 winner: Helene Li (Canada)
- 2nd position: Anmol Bhatia (USA)
- 3rd position: Ugne Birstonaite (Lithuania)
