It is involved in the stabilization of microtubules, structures that transport nutrients and signals within nerve cells.

Role and function of Tau protein

Normally, Tau proteins help maintain the integrity of the neuronal cytoskeleton.

In some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, the Tau protein becomes abnormally phosphorylated and forms neurofibrillary tangles. These aggregates disrupt communication between neurons and contribute to their degeneration.

The Tau protein is a key biomarker in several conditions called tauopathies, such as:
